Lord of Storm's End and cousin to the Mad King, Steffon Baratheon was sent across the sea to find a bride of Valyrian blood for Prince Rhaegar. He found nothing, and on the voyage home Shipbreaker Bay took his vessel apart in full view of the castle walls, with his sons watching from the battlements.
The storm's cruelty was in the distance: close enough to see, too far to reach. It made Robert a lord at an age when he was ready to be nothing of the kind, and it is difficult not to read the rest of his life — the appetite, the noise, the refusal to sit still — against that afternoon on the walls.
