Renly was Robert's face without Robert's mileage — handsome, charming, effortlessly liked, and entirely untested by anything harder than a tourney. People remarked constantly on the resemblance, which delighted Renly and grated on Stannis, who had actually done the suffering and looked like it.
He sat the small council as master of laws and was rather good company and rather little else. When the king lay dying, Renly's instinct was not grief but arithmetic: he made his own bid for a crown he had no particular claim to, on the strength of being popular. It was a very Baratheon impulse, executed with none of Robert's terrifying conviction.
