At Ashford, Robert's stormlanders ran into the vanguard of the Reach army and were beaten — the single defeat in an otherwise flawless war record. The credit belongs almost entirely to Randyll Tarly, whose van did the actual fighting and whose reputation as the finest field commander of his generation was made there.

Mace Tyrell dined out on Ashford for the rest of his life, which is its own commentary. Tarly said little and won battles, and he is the only man alive who could truthfully claim to have beaten Robert Baratheon in the field.
