An apprentice in a King's Landing forge, working steel with black hair, blue eyes, and a stubborn strength that anyone who had known the young Robert would have recognised instantly. Jon Arryn came asking after him shortly before he died, which is a large part of why he died.
Gendry is the tidiest irony in the whole story: while three golden-haired Lannister children were being raised as princes, Robert's actual son was hammering out helmets a mile from the Red Keep and had no idea. He inherited the arms and the shoulders and none of the rest.
