Robert went to ground in Stoney Sept during the rebellion, hidden — tradition insists — in a brothel while Jon Connington searched the town house by house. Bella was born of that hiding, named for the bells that rang the day the battle turned.

She grew up in the same brothel, knowing perfectly well whose daughter she was and getting nothing whatsoever for it. Of all the children scattered across the realm by Robert's appetite, she is the one whose existence is most directly a by-product of the war itself.
