Jaime Lannister put a sword through the back of the king he was sworn to protect and handed Robert an empty Iron Throne. The realm called him oathbreaker for it forever after; a fair reading is that he stopped a madman from burning King's Landing to ash. Robert took the crown the act delivered and thought no better of the man who delivered it.
He kept his white cloak through Robert's entire reign, standing guard over a king whose wife and children were his own — the longest-running joke in Westeros, and nobody at court was laughing because nobody at court knew. He is a playable fighter in the King's Tourney, which feels appropriate for a man whose whole life was decided by what he did with a sword.
