Born of a Florent noblewoman at Storm's End, Edric was the single bastard Robert ever formally acknowledged, and he was raised in the castle where Robert himself grew up. Highborn on both sides, he received the education and the standing that Robert's other children never got.
It says something uncomfortable about the king that acknowledgement followed rank rather than affection: the boy he claimed was the one whose mother's family could not be ignored. Being the recognised one turned out to be its own kind of danger later, when kings began looking for royal blood.
