The Girl Across the Sea

Daenerys Targaryen

The exiled child Robert wanted dead — the order that cost him Ned Stark.

Portrait of Daenerys Targaryen

Born in a storm on Dragonstone as her family's world ended, Daenerys grew up in exile across the Narrow Sea, sold into a Dothraki marriage by a brother with more ambition than sense. To Robert she was never a person at all, only the last loose end of a dynasty he had spent his whole life hating.

When word came that she was carrying a khal's child, Robert ordered her killed. Ned refused outright, resigned the Handship, and the friendship that had survived a war finally cracked over a girl neither man had ever met. It is the clearest look the story ever gives at what fifteen years on the Iron Throne had done to him. She is a playable fighter in the King's Tourney — the ghost at the feast, given a fighting chance.
